So on September 5th 2020 I managed to complete my first half ironman. I had been registered for the Calgary Half Ironman but they cancelled it due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
For the next few days I tossed around the idea of just doing it on my own. It would be the longest race I’d ever done so I was a little nervous to commit to it without having all the aid stations and people around. I took my road bike out to the Saskatchewan river crossing and had a beautiful ride. I was so inspired I decided to commit to doing the race solo. I also decided to put it out on Facebook and Instagram to stop me backing out!
After a couple of taper weeks I was all set and itching to get going! Saturday the 29th August I woke at 6am buzzing with excitement! I stepped out the front door and thought…hmm 🤨
It was much colder than usual and really really windy. I tried not to worry and headed out to Sylvan. I was ready to go!
Yeh, well, that was a total disaster! I was such a miserable jerk with my wife all day that day! 😂
Anyway, I checked the wind forecast for the next day and it was even worse. So I decided to postpone to the following week.
On the Friday I discovered that carb-loading is a lot more intensive than I realized! I had thought a couple of beers and some chocolate would suffice but that was way off! I decided to record a video of my rambling thoughts on the matter…
The following morning was beautiful! Calm seas and clear skies! I recorded Facebook LIVE video clips throughout the race and stuck them all together in this video…
The following day I was pretty knackered but I managed to pull myself together well enough to record a little race review…
So now I’m left pondering my options for a winter project. I’m definitely leaning towards cross country skiing. It would be really cool to do a cross country skiing race (if they are having any races this year).
If anyone knows anything about cross country skiing I’d love some beginner tips! What kind of gear to buy, how much should I spend, what kind of race to do???? Any help would be much appreciated! Just leave a comment below!
I really enjoyed the Facebook LIVE videos during the race and I feel inspired to do more. So I’ve recorded my first Q&A video this last week. If you have any questions you’d like me to answer I’d love to hear them. Just send me an email or leave a comment.
If you’d like to tune in to the videos I’m thinking Saturday evening at 5pm MT (7pm EST) but this may change. Just click here to follow me on Facebook.
